Christopher Harrison is pleased to announce he has reached the Top 101 of the International Aerial Photographer of the Year 2025, the first and inaugural year of this competition. "I'm thrilled to have reached the Top 101 in the International Aerial Photographer of the Year 2025. The standard, as evidenced by the gallery of this year's awarded photographers, is extremely high - so to be a part of it is a real privilege. I'd like to congratulate all of the other awarded photographers who have been included in the Top 101, as well as those who won the various categories.
The photograph which I had awarded is called "The Long Shadow" and was captured using my trusty and reliable 4-year-old DJI Air 2S drone. It was captured on the 1st March 2025 in Oxfordshire, on the first day of meteorological spring, where the weather conditions were spectacular. Mist sat low to the ground, with clear skies above. This led to the most magnificent scene from above, where the mist lit up in warm sunrise light, and cast this long shadow through a small clump of trees on a Bronze Age burial mound - known as a 'barrow'.
What I love about this scene is its simplicity. The trees are the focal point, but the furrows in the farmed fields align with the path of the light, the warm light on the right side contrasting with the cooler and darker light on the left. The shadow joins the light and dark together. It creates a very pleasing composition, and one I am thrilled the judges enjoyed.
Finally, I hope this photograph inspires others to explore their local areas with their cameras and turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. Many photographs in competitions naturally end up being from some of the most 'epic' locations in the world - often requiring travel. What I hope to prove is that you don't need to go far to do well in photography competitions!"
