Autumn Woodland Photography

Autumn in a beechwood lasts about three weeks, and getting the timing right is most of the battle. Too early and the canopy is still green; too late and one windy night takes the lot. I spend most of October and November watching the forecast for the mornings when fog sits in the valleys and the low sun comes through the trunks.

Most of these were made in the Chiltern beechwoods and in Savernake Forest, where the older oaks hold on a little longer. Autumn is where my woodland photography really began, and it is still the season I look forward to most.

Shot at low drone altitude, the diagonal ridge of emerging woodland divides the composition, giving structure to an otherwise formless sea of mist. The pale warmth catching copper and amber crowns against the cool tonal frozen ground is what lifts this from record to image.

The fog was thick enough to help soften the background, however left enough light and detail through to give the scene wonderful depth. The result is an almost painterly scene that invites you to walk down the path and explore this woodland further.
