The Hour Before

Fanal Forest · Spring

Ancient Til laurel trees emerge from dense cloud in Fanal forest, Madeira, in the pre-dawn stillness of late spring. The dominant foreground tree, its limbs twisted horizontally by centuries of trade-wind pressure, anchors a recession of silhouetted forms that dissolve progressively into the blue-grey murk. Flat, diffuse light strips the scene of colour, leaving structure and atmosphere to carry the image.
