Fanal Forest, Madeira

Fanal sits at around 1,150 metres on the Paul da Serra plateau in the north west of Madeira, and it is the strangest place I have ever photographed. The til trees here are survivors of the ancient forest that once covered the island - many of them over five hundred years old, hollowed out, leaning, and shaped by centuries of wind into forms that look drawn rather than grown.

What makes it is the cloud. The plateau catches the low cloud coming in off the Atlantic and holds it, so the fog arrives and clears and arrives again through the morning, sometimes within minutes. You can stand in front of the same tree for an hour and come away with five completely different photographs. I have had mornings there where nothing happened at all, and mornings I will remember for the rest of my life.
