The Long Procession

Fanal Forest · Spring

Crepuscular rays break through a gap in the ancient laurel canopy of Fanal forest, Madeira, the mist-laden air rendering each shaft of light as a solid column. Gnarled, moss-draped trunks frame a steep woodland path, their contorted forms characteristic of the UNESCO-listed laurisilva. The low sun angle and residual cloud create a quality of light rarely sustained beyond a few minutes.
