The Crown of the Hill

Brightwell Barrow · Spring

At Brightwell Barrow, near the Wittenham Clumps in Oxfordshire, a small stand of bare-crowned trees crowns the rounded hill as dawn afterglow saturates the sky in rose and violet. Mist pools between the rolling ridges below, reducing the middle distance to layered silhouettes and suggesting a temperature inversion across the valley. The wide crop isolates the copse against an expansive sky, lending the composition an unusual quietness.
