A Still Sea

Brightwell Barrow · Spring

A temperature inversion buries the Vale of White Horse beneath a still sea of fog, viewed from Brightwell Barrow near the Wittenham Clumps in Oxfordshire, leaving frost-covered hilltops and copses of bare-branched trees standing clear in early dawn light. The curving field margins and converging ridge lines give the elevated ground an almost archipelago quality. Warm tones from the low sun catch the crowns of the remaining autumn-holdover foliage against the cold grey below.
