The Painted Stillness

Brightwell Barrow · Spring

Brightwell Barrow, the low drumlin near the Wittenham Clumps in Oxfordshire, rises above two bands of valley fog in late winter, its tight cluster of bare deciduous trees sitting mid-frame in near-perfect bilateral symmetry. The surrounding lowland is entirely consumed by the inversion, reducing the scene to tone alone and lending it an austere, almost painted stillness.
